NTC orders Globe to restore text rates

MANILA, Philippines — Acting on the complaint of consumer advocacy group TXTPower, the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) has ordered Globe Telecom Inc. to restore the rates for its unlimited text messaging pending a final ruling.

In a letter addressed to Globe vice president Froilan M. Castelo, NTC Commissioner Abraham Abesamis ordered the firm to “hold in abeyance the implementation of the new unlimited text service and restore the unlimited text promo priced at P10 for one day, P25 for two days and P50 for five days.”

Abesamis cited TXTPower’s complaint, which said Globe’s newspaper advertisements published on Feb. 1, showed that the telco’s four-day Unlimitxt now costs P80 or P20 a day. The charge for the old Unlimitxt was P50 for five days or about P10 a day.

The consumer advocacy group said the replacement of Unlimitxt with the new promos (Unlimitxt, Daytime Unlimited Texting, Nighttime Unlimited Texting and TXTPlus) “is obviously a rate hike.”
